US subprime problem has affected our markets also in a very bad way. It all started on July 24th. Sensex was closed on 24th at an all time high of 15794.92. But then suddenly the subprime mortgage concerns hit the world markets and sensex dropped 1653.4 points in last 3 weeks (-10.47%) and closed at 14141.52 on 17th Aug 2007. We have analyzed some major stock's performance during this 3 weeks correction period and here is the result..

This chart shows some major stocks price changes in last 3 weeks and it's relative strength compared to BSE SENSEX. Reliance industries was holding up well with a positive strength value of 14.94. Even though it lost Rs 159 .70 (8.35%) it is less compared to sensex which lost 10.47% and nifty (lost 11.1%). Another Major index heavy weight ONGC lost Rs133.05 ie 14.51% with a negative strength value of -26.12. NTPC outperformed the market during the negative trend period with a strength value of 62.35. It lost only Rs 1 or .61%.

 

Banking : In the banking sector Federal Bank, Centurion Bank, State Bank of India and IDBI were holding up with strength value of 61.29, 88.71, 45.94, 110.59 respectively. ICICI Bank (-29.53), HDFC Bank (-26.24) and Reliance Capital (-32.47) were very volatile. Other major PSU banks like Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Andhra Bank, Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank and Union Bank are in the -ve territory loosing more compared to SENSEX and NIFTY.

 

Realty : In Realty Sector only Orbit Corp and HDIL in the positive region with 249.59 and 9.12 respectively. Even though DLF was fighting well in last few days it lost during the initial days. DLF is at -6.06 and Unitech is at -43.59. Parsvnath and Indiabulls are major loosers with value -97.65 and -117. Indiabulls lost -27.76% and Parsvnath lost -24.95% in last 18 trading sessions.

 

Metals : Metal is another major looser in this correction phase. Tata Steel lost -24.57% and stands with a strength value of -95.18. Hindalco is another looser with -24.95% and strength value of -99.88. SAIL is at -24.18 but Neyveli Lignite Corporation is in the positive region with 34.88.

 

Telecom : In Telecom sector all stocks were underperforming the market. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications were performing in similar way and lost around 14% with strength value of -26.00 and -25.76 respectively. MTNL also were holding up with -27.88. VSNL lost -22.78% and Idea lost -17.26% with strength value of -84.41 and -45.29.

 

Media : In Media Balaji Telefilms and TV Today outperformed the SENSEX with 11.71 and 131.53 respectively. ADLabs at -44.88, Sun TV at -81.82 and Zee TV at -12.82. Inox Leisure is at -4.76, NDTV at 1.65 and Cinemax at -32.35.

 

FMCG : It was the only sector performed well during this volatile period. Most of the FMCG stocks are in the positive region. ITC at 72.71, Hindustan Unilever at 45.00, Colgate at 67.59 and Dabur at 58.82.

Auto : In Auto Sector Maruti Udyog, Bajaj Auto, Ashok Leyland and MRF are in the positive territory with values 35.18, 17.41, 6.06, 20.94 resp. Tata Motors at -23.71 and Hero Honda at -0.24. Mahindra is a major looser in Auto sector which lost 18.12% and strength value of -51.35

Capital Goods and Infrastructure : In Capital Goods Sector BHEL was not performing well. It lost -14.83% with a strength value of -27.18. L & T : -18.59, Siemens : 2.35, Punjlloyd : 32.94, Thermax : 83.18, BEL : -5.24, GMR Infra -44.24 and IVRCL Infra at -39.82

Power : In the power sector Crompton Greaves at 70.00, Suzlon Energy : -72.53, Torrent power : 131.82,  Reliance Energy : 22.94 , NTPC at 62.35 and ABB at 1.24

Construction : Cement and Construction companies were holding up except ACC which lost -14.83% stands at -25.53. India Cements at 45.53, HIndustan Construction Company : -3.35 and Nagarjuna Construction : 11.65

Tourism : In Tourism stocks Tourism Finance Corporation of india is a clear winner with 174.35 but other tourism stocks underperformed the market like Hotel Leela -42.76 and Indian Hotels -9.82
